On Why These Reservation Protests Make Little Sense.

Do you think the students below would want swap their lives with the people above?

(*Hint: Those above get reservations!)

Whom would you rather be?

The students in the picture seem to think they are going to be worse off than those in picture above if the new reservation legislation comes about.

Their arguments,
1. The 'Quality' of students is going to detiororate, if you fix a percentage of seats in the country's best institutions.
2. They are going to have fewer seats and fewer jobs if the legislation comes about.

The second argument's rather selfish, if they are going to say they are worse off, then those from the 'Backward' castes can say the same thing if the lawmakers decide against.
Moreover, the 'backward' castes, represented poorly in the private sector and in the country's top educational institutions, have a more legitimate claim.

So that leaves us with argument no. 1,
'Quality' is going to detiororate, let's take that to be true, so let's say the reservation doesn't go through on these grounds, who benefits?
The 'upper' castes, simply because they are going to take a disproportionately large share of the benefits that accrue from economic growth.
So that's two self serving arguments that claim to act for the nations' sake.

Reservations need to be opposed because they fail and their failure is pretty evident thanks to a small number of 'backward' caste beneficiaries taking a big chunk of the benefits.
Incentives that make improving the status of the backward castes a national priority by including private sector firms, schools, universities are likely to bring more change than half hearted attempts by India's lethargic bureaucracy.
These could include -
1. Tax cuts for companies that have diverse caste populations
2. More govt funding for those schools that follow population patterns in castes and incentives for top city schools to take students from villages and backward castes such as vouchers, tax cuts etc etc.
3. Lumpsum payments for girls who complete class X, Class XII, and Intermediate and University.
4. University admission policies can be altered as the IIMs seem to do to take in more girls, Backward castes can be accommodated without a strict rule for 49% or whatever.
5. More scholarships and funding for backward caste students.

Obsolete best describes the nature of the protests today, with old ideas from the unsuccessful Mandal protests passing through high tech communication networks .

The angry young man is passe', they don't even make movies like that these days.

No anti-reservation protest can be complete without a recognition that more needs to be done for the 'backward' castes. That's why the current protests are bound to fail.

Why reservations only in jobs and admissions to professional courses? Why not in parliament, legislatures, judiciary, defense forces and people going abroad for higher studies and jobs. The equitable social justice can be done only if it encompasses all the sectors.

I am not in favour of reservations simply because they don't work. That's fairly evident from what we see in India today.
If it doesn't work, you can't ask for it to be extended to more sectors.
What i am saying is that these protests need to address the fact that a lot more needs to be done for the 'backward' castes - Which they don't!
They need to come up with alternatives to reservations that make both parties better off.
Their only argument is that they are going to be worse off - which doesn't make a good case for negotiating their demands.

I ask Mr Arjun singh,
that will he go to a doctor when he knows the doctor is from reserved category and is not passed by his merit?

Will he give his life into somebody's hands who isnt intellectual enough to handle the life efficiently?

what kind of Indian breed are we creating by travelling backwards?

@Drpeds,
First, We are not travelling backwards by helping people worse off come up, although I don't agree that using reservations is the best way to go about it.
And if they pass the same exam, they should be competent enough to be doctors.
Further, there are equally large numbers of 'forward' caste who buy their way into medical colleges without getting enough marks.
So if you are fighting for merit, it's a pretty lopsided argument that you present.

The Knowledge Commission's report.

http://www.ndtv.com/template/template.asp?template=Reservation&slug=Quota+row%3A+Bhargava+writes+to+PM&id=88348&callid=1&category=National

I find it an outrageously ambitious plan that puts the impetus entirely on the government.

By failing to involve other parties in achieving its aim, the government likes to think it can drive change on its own, unfortunately that's not what it's record says.

But as millions of Indians, esp OBCs know, anything that the government does is at best half-hearted.
It is disappointing that such a distinguished panel comes up with such a plain old dull and most likely inept plan of building more schools and giving more scholarships.

And how long is building an eye popping 400,000 schools going to take?
And are they going to be good enough
And how do they make sure that these schools won't turn into OBC Ghetto schools with OBC students and OBC teachers?

What are you upto?

Very strongly agree with you. I am opposed to reservations only because they are a cosmetic measure by the government. I would also like to draw attention to 2 excellent articles - one by S.S.Gill called "Diluting Mandal" and Pratap Bhanu Mehta's resignation letter (resignation from the Knowledge Commission).

Now here's why I have a problem with your post. You have two pictures. Of poor Indians and what appear to be middle class students. It's a stark contrast, one that appeals to emotion rather than logic.

Because it implies that poor equals low caste. And reservations are a magic switch you turn on in order to get from picture 1 to picture 2.

I'm cynical enough to believe that it's very likely that the kids in picture 1 will never benefit from reservation because they will never finish high school.

I'm all for upliftment of the economically underprivileged. Most people are. To make caste the ONLY metric is a little simplistic. All it does is foster resentment, besides keeping the ridiculously archaic caste system alive and kicking.

what you fail to address is that huge chunk of population that belongs to a "BC" category .. but fares well economically...
Its not fair on all the other kids with parents (who themselves are doctors or engg) and real socioeconomic/class driven expectations of them to be doctors and engineers ..
its not that we dont need low class ppl who become docts and engineers.. but it would be nice if they actually benefited from this.. what would be a better scenario (and an apt compromise)
Is to leave the reservations for students of exceptional merit that are not only BC but lie below a set socioeconomic background.. :)
(and it is my popular belief that they are set in place)
A cheap political trick of a term .. shouldnt be a disaster to these young interns' kids is all i want :) .. when they have them .. :P god i sound shallow and heartless !

did i mention their younger siblings who are sweating their arses off at those cults that we call coaching centres to live up to brother darling and sister darlings who procured a seat .. :) .. shallow shallow ppl

reservations i feel is treating the symptom not the underlying problem.. how about we put in place.. some decent education centers and money into educating this 'backward' castes... and put the same suicidal implications we all come under that make us doctors in the end.. and see if they can step up to the plate thats all im saying :)
